Definition

Small-to-medium businesses (SMB) are a type of business in which its revenue, assets, or number of employees is below a particular limit.

Countries usually have their own set of criteria when determining which businesses are considered an SMB to distinguish them from large corporations.

For example, an SMB in the US may have up to 1,500 employees. Based on the US Small Business Administration, the threshold varies per industry.

On the other hand, an SMB in Canada has fewer than 500 employees. Plus, they are eligible for incentives such as financing and lower tax rate.
