Definition

A scope is an outline that identifies the boundaries and coverage of a project. In most cases, a service agreement between a company and its service provider includes one.

It's an essential part of project planning and project management. A scope documents the following details:

  • Objectives and milestones of the project
  • Deliverables from the service provider
  • Tasks involved to complete the project
  • Said tasks respective deadlines
  • Breakdown of costs

When well-defined, it enables project managers to provide a schedule and cost estimates to accomplish the service. Plus, the latter allows them to understand which activity falls within the boundaries of the project and which are not covered by the agreement.
